Processing

Machinability: fair
Chip: Stringy continuous chips similar to LDPE. LLDPE is rarely machined in practice — virtually all production is film or rotomolded parts.
Gumming: Moderate. Friction heat from dull tooling or inadequate coolant will smear the surface. LLDPE melts at 120–130°C.
Finish: 32–63 Ra. Soft and deforming under tool contact pressure.
Tooling: Sharp HSS or carbide, very positive rake, generous relief. Speed 300–700 SFM, light feeds. Workholding is the dominant challenge.
Like LDPE, LLDPE is rarely a machining material. Production parts are blown film, cast film, rotomolded tanks, or extruded tubing. Hot-air welding works for fabrication; bonding requires surface activation.

Additives
uv stabilizer (2–3% carbon black or HALS package) — Standard for rotomolded outdoor tanks, geomembranes, and agricultural film. Carbon-pigmented black is the workhorse outdoor LLDPE.
nucleating agent (0.1–0.5%) — For clear stretch film and cast film applications. Tightens spherulite size and reduces haze.
processing aid (0.05–0.5%) — Fluoropolymer processing aids reduce melt fracture (sharkskin) in high-shear film blowing. Near-universal in modern film resins.
antistatic carbon (8–15%) — Anti-static rotomolded tanks and electronics packaging.
flame retardant non halogen (10–20%) — Flame-retardant grades for cable jacketing applications.

Chemical resistance

LLDPE's chemical resistance is between LDPE's and HDPE's, closer to HDPE due to similar crystallinity. The primary distinction is LLDPE's significantly better Environmental Stress Crack Resistance (ESCR) — a key reason it's preferred over LDPE for chemical packaging and pipe coatings.

Notes & applications

Overview

LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) is the toughest commodity PE film resin. The polymer occupies a specific niche: density similar to LDPE (soft, flexible) with mechanical toughness closer to HDPE’s thanks to its linear backbone with controlled short-chain branching (typically 1-butene, 1-hexene, or 1-octene comonomers).

The single application that made LLDPE the largest-volume PE film resin is stretch and pallet wrap. LLDPE pre-stretches 200–300% on the wrapping machine without tearing, holds load under tension, and resists puncture from box corners. LDPE cannot match this combination — it tears too easily once initiated. HDPE is too stiff. LLDPE is purpose-built for it.

Within the polyethylene family:

  • HDPE — rigid, high strength, lower elongation. Pipe, cutting boards.
  • LDPE — soft, very flexible, low strength. Bread bags, squeeze bottles.
  • LLDPE — flexible with significantly higher toughness than LDPE. Stretch wrap, heavy-duty bags, rotomolded tanks.

For most film and bag applications today, LLDPE has displaced LDPE — the toughness-per-mil-of-film advantage is large enough that thinner LLDPE films perform as well or better than thicker LDPE films, lowering total resin use.

Where LLDPE actually lives

  1. Stretch wrap and pallet wrap — the dominant application. mLLDPE grades (Exceed, Enable, Affinity) drive the high-performance end.
  2. Heavy-duty bags — trash, contractor, lawn-and-leaf, industrial. LLDPE replaced LDPE in this category by ~1990 because of puncture resistance.
  3. Rotomolded tanks — agricultural water tanks, chemical tanks, kayaks, playground equipment. LLDPE’s combination of toughness, low-temperature ductility, and melt flow at oven sintering temperatures makes it the rotomolding standard.
  4. Geomembrane liners — landfill caps, pond liners, mining containment. Higher elongation than HDPE makes LLDPE the choice for sloped or irregular substrates.
  5. Food packaging film — cheese wrap, frozen food bags, multilayer structures where LLDPE provides toughness.

Machining notes (rarely needed)

LLDPE is rarely a machining material. Production parts are blown film, cast film, rotomolded, or extruded. When machining is needed (e.g., fitting customization on rotomolded tanks):

  • Sharp HSS or carbide, positive rake, generous relief
  • Slow speeds (300–700 SFM)
  • Light feeds, flood coolant
  • Minimal clamping pressure

Hot-air thermoplastic welding works for LLDPE-to-LLDPE fabrication. Surface activation (plasma, corona, flame) required before adhesive bonding.

Variant selection guidance

  • Commodity LLDPE (Dowlex, Marlex) — the workhorse film resin for stretch and heavy-duty bag applications.
  • mLLDPE (Exceed, Enable, Affinity, Elite) — premium metallocene grades for high-performance stretch film, cling film, and shrink wrap. 10–25% cost premium for 20–30% higher tear and puncture resistance.
  • Rotomold grade — pulverized powder for tanks, kayaks, and large rotomolded parts. Optimized for sintering and impact toughness.
  • Geomembrane — carbon-pigmented, 40–100 mil sheet for water and waste containment. Higher elongation than HDPE geomembrane.
  • Heavy-duty bag — higher-MW LLDPE for industrial and contractor bags.

Failure modes worth designing around

Environmental Stress Cracking (ESC) — LLDPE has substantially better ESC resistance than LDPE due to its linear backbone, and octene-comonomer LLDPE is among the best-performing PE resins in surfactant-rich service. However, sustained tensile stress + surfactant + temperature still initiates slow crack growth eventually. Pipe-grade or octene mLLDPE where chemistry is aggressive.

Creep is severe — like LDPE, LLDPE cold-flows under sustained load. Rotomolded tanks support themselves at room temperature but slowly deform under standing fluid columns or external mechanical load. Specify wall thickness with creep deflection in mind.

Softening above 75°C — LLDPE’s continuous service temperature is between LDPE’s and HDPE’s. Hot fluids (>80°C) in rotomolded tanks cause significant deflection and accelerated creep.

Thermal expansion at 150–200 × 10⁻⁶/°C is high. Large rotomolded parts span ~5–10 mm per meter per 40°C swing. Mount with sliding joints and flexible connections.

UV degradation of unstabilized LLDPE is similar to LDPE — natural LLDPE yellows in months outdoors. Carbon-pigmented black or HALS- stabilized grades for outdoor service.

Stretch wrap “tear propagation” — once a tear initiates in LLDPE stretch film, it can run rapidly under tension. mLLDPE significantly reduces this through narrower molecular weight distribution. For hand-stretch wrap applications, mLLDPE pays for itself in reduced load failures.

Applications by industry

  • Packaging — stretch and pallet wrap (dominant LLDPE volume), heavy- duty bags, cheese wrap, frozen food bags. mLLDPE for high-performance cling and shrink applications.
  • Agriculture and rural — rotomolded water tanks (1,000–10,000 gallon), silage wrap, mulch film, drip irrigation. LLDPE rotomolded tanks replaced steel for non-pressurized water storage.
  • Construction — geomembrane pond liners, landfill caps, mining containment. UV-stabilized for outdoor exposure.
  • Recreation — rotomolded kayaks (the dominant material for sit-on-top and recreational kayaks), playground equipment, outdoor coolers.
  • Industrial — rotomolded chemical tanks for non-aggressive service, bulk storage bins, IBC liners.
  • Consumer products — heavy-duty trash bags, garden equipment, toys, sporting goods.
